STUTTERER

Written and Directed by Benjamin Cleary, STUTTERER is a short film about Greenwood (Matthew Needham) whose lush inner thoughts are rendered mute by a crippling stutter.  Greenwood feels isolated from the world, despite a flourishing online relationship.

WINNER of the Oscar for Best Short Film, Live Action, this poignant story is about a man’s struggle to communicate with the world.  He embodies the words in his mind so eloquently, yet can barely translate them verbally.  His inability to communicate normally causes him to live in his own solitary confinement.

The light in his life is an online relationship with Ellie (Chloe Pirrie).   They message each other through the computer.  She reminds him that they’ve been friends now for six months.  She sends him a message that she’ll be in London and asks if he would like to meet.  The “safety” he feels with their online relationship is now jeopardized.

Beautiful detail is given to the character’s struggle – from how he rehearses his lines to trying to make a simple phone call.  His inner thoughts and observances are rich and insightful.

Sensitively portrayed by Matthew Needham, this tender film reminds us all of our need to be heard.
