The modern world presents significant challenges for romance and marriage. In the short film Unmatched, writer and director Shaquille “Shaq” Hawkins seeks to shed light on the cultural and societal stigmas surrounding modern relationships. The story follows Calvin (Yisa Durosinmi) and Veronica (Naderah Munajj), a couple returning home from an event who become entangled in a tense and unsettling argument centered on trust. As the night unfolds—with emotions running high and alcohol freely flowing—their conflict intensifies during a visit from their friend Dre (Olander Wilson). Themes of deception, disloyalty, suspicion, and intimacy are woven throughout this gripping and suspenseful relationship drama.

Durosinmi delivers a visceral, emotionally charged performance as Calvin, bringing a striking intensity to a character suddenly thrust into conflict with little preamble. While audiences may find themselves wanting more backstory to fully understand Calvin’s motivations, the film’s “moment in time” structure prioritizes raw interaction and immediate emotional tension over exposition. Set entirely in a single location, Unmatched unfolds like an intimate stage play, giving the cast space to build and sustain emotional momentum. Opposite Durosinmi, Munajj delivers a powerful portrayal of Calvin’s wife, Veronica. Her performance is both fierce and deeply affecting, as she confronts her husband with a blend of unflinching honesty and emotional vulnerability.

Hawkins as writer and director on this film creates an emotionally gripping drama showcasing the perils of marriage when trust is lacking. The cinematography (K’Twan “Tay” Etheridge) creates a lot of visual tension with the hand-held camera work that makes the audience feel like they are right in middle of the action, adding a layer of immediacy and emotional intimacy. The camera work also makes the audience feel the full spectrum of the characters tension as they react to each other quickly. This raw, unsteady visual style mirrors the instability in Calvin and Veronica’s relationship, making each moment feel more personal and urgent.

Complementing the strong performances is the film’s stylish set design, which brings a surprising sense of dynamism to the single-location setting. The attention to aesthetic detail not only enhances the film’s theatrical quality but also grounds the story in a believable, lived-in environment. The handheld cinematography, paired with the carefully curated design, adds an immediacy and intimacy that deepens the emotional impact. Meanwhile, the bright, deliberate lighting serves as a visual counterpoint to the script’s intense and somber mood, while subtly highlighting the characters’ affluent cultural and professional status.

Unmatched is a clever and engaging film that sheds light on the modern-day challenges faced by young couples in relationships and marriage. It offers audiences an emotional glimpse into what happens when love begins to unravel, and how the fallout can threaten not only romantic bonds but close friendships as well.
