Jamarcus Rose (Duane Ervin) is a baseball-obsessed young man who signs up for a mentorship program after some convincing from his grandmother Esther (Ruthie Austin). Hesitant at first, Jamarcus meets Jasper (Stephen Cofield Jr.), his assigned coach, who begins to unravel the many internal roadblocks of his assignee.

Jamarcus has no shortage of ambition, and his choice of sport inspires him daily. Acquainting himself with Jasper seems like no accident, and writer/director Marcellus Cox’s screenplay provides ample time for the relationship to unfold: for Jamarcus, it’s his talents and personality getting recognized for the first time—a powerful feeling that many people in disadvantaged communities like him might not experience. Jasper himself has his own past to reflect on, but his guidance of Jamarcus is the sort of inspiration the high schooler truly needs. Cox is no stranger to the kind of emotionally vulnerable tone permeating this particular story; his previous work on Liquor Bank is a prime showcase for his sensitivity as a writer who builds off real-life happenings and champions characters who might otherwise fall by the wayside. It’s the kind of filmmaking that, on top of being technically resonant, manages to find thematic resplendence through its embrace of individuals being vulnerable.

And so a breezy evening on the baseball pitch turns into something more than another mentorship encounter.

In a way, you’re seeing both sides of a coin. Jamarcus represents a youngster with nobody and nothing left to cling to, while Jasper is a mentor figure forged by hardships that should have broken others completely. The two compliment each other, and co-stars Ervin and Cofield Jr. are more than up to the task of making their connection feel authentic and grounded. In a way, you’re seeing a version of Jamarcus on the straight and narrow represented through Jasper, but that reality is painted as a delicate one—one that is bitterly challenged in a final twist. It’s a bold ending and one that’s difficult to forget.

Jamarcus Rose & Da 5 Bullet Holes marks another outstanding chapter in Marcellus Cox’s filmography, characterized by excellent performances and a story delivered with signature affection.
